El mes pasado, presentamos nuestra postura acerca de que los métodos biológicos, involucrando el uso de depredadores naturales de las plantas, son la mejor opción para resolver el problema del lirio acuático en el Lago de Chapala. Nosotros, junto con nuestros aliados en el esfuerzo de salvar al Lago de Chapala, hemos enviado una carta al Presidente Fox comunicando nuestra postura contra la propuesta de aplicación del glifosato en el lago. Esa carta apareció en por lo menos un periódico local. Adicionalmente, un colega del área del Lago Victoria en Africa ha contactado al gobierno Mexicano compartiendo las experiencias exitosas que ellos han tenido utilizando los métodos de control biológico y advirtiendo de los riesgos de añadir aun más a lo que ya es una “sopa de químicos” aquí en Chapala.
Sí, se puede decir que un par de cartas no ayudarán en nada. Sin embargo, es seguro que, a menos que alguien levante la voz en oposición al uso del glifosato, nada cambiará. No podemos quedarnos cruzados de brazos sin hacer algo al respecto . . . esperamos que usted piense lo mismo.
En este momento, sería de mucha ayuda el que ustedes, nuestros miembros, tomarán alguna acción para dejarle saber al gobierno Mexicano que no están de acuerdo con el plan actual del gobierno de aplicar glifosato sobre el lirio. A continuación encontrará ideas de como puede ayudar:
(1) Re-envíe estas boletines mensuales a otras personas que usted sepa les importa el futuro del Lago de Chapala.
(2) Imprima algunas copias de este boletín para mostrarselas a gente con quien trabaje o haga negocios, etc. para iniciar un diálogo y aportar a la concientización del problema que representa el combate del lirio acuático.
(3) Escriba una carta o envíe un correo electrónico al editor del periódico o revista que usted más lea, para que se le pida al gobierno que rechace la idea del glifosato y, en su lugar, se enfoque en el uso de controles biológicos.
(4) Escriba una carta al presidente Vicente Fox expresando su oposición al uso de químicos dañinos, tales como el glifosato, para el combate del lirio acuático ya que ya tenemos demasiados químicos en el Lago y no queremos que se dañe la ya frágil ecología aun más añadiendo otro químico que se sabe tiene efectos tóxicos. (5) Anime a sus amigos a que se afilien a Amigos del Lago ( www.amigosdelago.org ) para mostrar su apoyo para lo que tratamos de hacer.
Mientras tanto, continuaremos monitoreando lo que el gobierno esta haciendo, presentando nuestra oposición de manera formal a las propuestas del gobierno con las cuales no estemos de acuerdo, y manteniéndolo informado de lo que esta ocurriendo con el Lago de Chapala. Last month, we presented our position that biological approaches, involving the use of natural predators of a plant, are the best way to manage the water hyacinth problem on Lake Chapala. We, together with our allies in the effort to save Lake Chapala, have submitted a letter to President Fox stating our position against the proposed application of glyphosate (aka “Round-Up,” “Rodeo”) on the Lake. In addition, a colleague from the Lake Victoria area in Africa has also contacted the Mexican government about the successful experiences they have had using biological controls and about the dangers of adding to what is already a “chemical soup” here.
Yes, it can be said that a couple of letters won’t do any good. However, it is certain that, unless someone stands up in opposition to the use of glyphosate, nothing will change. We cannot stand by and do nothing and hope you feel the same.
At this point in time, it would be very helpful for you, our members, to also take some action to let the Mexican government know that you do not like the government’s current plan of spraying glyphosate on the water hyacinths. Here are some ideas of what you can do:
(1) Forward these monthly newsletters to other people you know who care about the future of Lake Chapala.
(2) Print out some copies of these newsletters to show to people with whom you do business, to initiate discussion and to increase people’s understanding of the water hyacinth issue.
(3) Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper you read most to ask the government to reject the glyphosate idea and, instead, focus on biological controls.
(4) Write a letter to President Fox expressing your opposition to using glyphosate on the water hyacinths since we already have enough chemicals in the Lake and don’t want to harm our local ecology even more by adding another chemical that is known to have toxic effects. (5) Encourage your friends to join Amigos del Lago (www.amigosdelago.org) to show their support for what we are trying to do.
In the meantime, we will continue to monitor what the government is doing, submit formal challenges to government proposals with which we disagree, and keep you informed of what is going on with Lake Chapala.
