Jalisco was the center of Catholic resistance to the harsh laws of the
government against the Church in the early 20th century. The movement was
known as the Cristeros.
History
Pre-hispanic people, the Chichimecas, inhabited this area. They were often
invaded by the Purapechas from the neighboring state of Michoacan. A small
population of Purapechas remain in the area.
