The Paricutin Volcano erupted from February 1943 to March 1952. It
is now considered one of the 12 Natural Wonders of the World. Lava
flowed 40 km, destroying the town of San Juan Parangaricutiro. It
stopped short of destroying the sanctuary of the church. A painting
of the event hangs in the ex-Hacienda Briseñas.
History
The Lerma river, which feeds Lake Chapala, is this town’s northern border. The town is named after the
many Briseño families who lived here. This is an unusual practice
in Mexico.
Famous citizens:
Prof. José Magaña
