Living Lakes

At the 7th Living Lakes Conference, August 25th 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lake Chapala and with it the organizations Sociedad Amigos del Lago de Chapala, A.C. and Fundación de la Cuenca Lerma-LagoChapala-Santiago, A.C. became candidate for the membership of Living Lakes.

At the 8th Living Lakes Conference, September 13th 2003 in Norwich, England we were accepted as full members!

Living Lakes - Vision and Mission

Who we are

Living Lakes is an international network and partnership for enhancing the protection, restoration and rehabilitation of lakes and their catchment areas, wetlands and freshwater of the world.

Vision

Save the lakes, wetlands and freshwater of the world

Mission

  • Lakes should be alive and available for the sustainable use of human kind

  • The conservation of the biodiversity and the preservation of fresh water resources, lakes and wetland ecosystems

  • The restoration of altered and disappearing wetlands and lake ecosystems

  • The improvement of the quality of life for the local communities (Agenda 21)

  • The commitment towards a sustainable use and development (for example agriculture, fishery, tourism, settlement, water use) of these ecosystems

  • The promotion of applied sciences and technologies towards the conservation of these ecosystems

  • Active support of educational programs and co operation with local communities towards the conservation of the biodiversity of these ecosystems

  • The dissemination of all information relevant to these ecosystems

Living Lakes - Terms of Reference for the membership in the Living Lakes Network

  • To declare to be in agreement with the Living Lakes vision and mission
    To actively participate in the Living Lakes Conferences and other events and activities

  • To produce an annual progress report

  • To seek active co-operation with other Living Lakes partners and associates

  • To actively co-operate with the GNF on the LL website, in working groups and other publications (book, journals, etc.)

  • To contribute towards the successful achievement of the Living Lakes mission and vision

  • To encourage the exchange of volunteers

  • To further and promote environmental education
